Veggi Tales

Just another post from Mel and Brian raving about the Saturday Farmer's Market and worrying what we'll do every Saturday morning when winter takes the Farmer's Market away!! Here's our latest plunder... green beans (which Brian grilled on the gas grill - pretty tasty), Maple Honey Oatmeal Bread (Oh! It's tasted like dessert bread, if that's possible?!), Pineapple Sage salsa (which we tried over chicken tonight), red cabbage, eggplant (it was so cute! I had to get it - and although I don't typically love eggplant, this time it was sooo yummy!), plenty of corn on the cob, and (not pictured) fresh haddock and fire-baked bread. Phew - and we'll have just enough time to eat it all before we go back for more this weekend!

Brian and I biked over to the market last weekend, which was a great workout... let's see if we can keep it up! (Brian says "That's what she said"... he got me!)

ps. Brian wanted to call this post "VeggiePets"..... silly boy

Belle v. The Birthday Cake :)

Happy 1st Birthday Belle! We went to visit Belle (daughter of M's cousin) a few days ago for her 1st Birthday party (and her first encounter with birthday cake... well, at least her own anyways!)

Really, I get this whole cake to myself? Hmmmmm
Here Meme... you give it a try before I really dig in!

Mommy thinks I'm so cute that I deserve a kiss... ha ha - gottcha!
And Uncle TJ didn't want to miss out on the fun! (Or at least someone ELSE didn't want him to feel left out!)

A few more pics from our trip

A few more photos we love from our trip out to Illinois.....

Green with Envy

Although I started my garden a little later than I'd planned, everything is doing pretty well so far. No critters have bothered my little garden patch (yet) so we're keeping our fingers crossed that everything grows well (since we're trying to do this 'au natural'). While we wait for our own garden's bounty to get bountiful, we've been frequenting the Saturday Farmer's Markets... can't get much better than the early corn, fresh peas, and tasty carrots we had last week that are grown just around the corner- Mmmm mm!

Carrots...

Lettuce (which I've been stealing from for a few weeks now)...My little bell peppers are growing!!
And our pole beans...
UPDATE: We picked our first pepper (seen here) and put it on homemade pizza.... it was so GOOOOOD! Can't wait until the rest plump up!

The Story of STUFF

Ok, I realize I'm asking a lot - but you should really make time to watch this. It WILL take 20 minutes of your valued time, but I think this woman Annie Leonard breaks down our pattern of consumption and just why it's problematic really well.

(Besides, you can waste 20 mins before you know it looking up random clips on YouTube - so no YouTube!!... just watch the clip)

Picking Berries at the Strawberry Patch

Brian and I (with Sue and Scott) went to a local Pick-Your-Own Strawberry patch. It turned out to be their last day of picking for the season - so we picked as much as we thought we could possibly eat... and then some! Because I insisted we pick so much we've been busy the past two nights cleaning and freezing the berries. But don't feel bad... we'll be the ones eating perfectly ripe Maine berries in the dead of winter :). But in the meantime, we've been eating a lot of fresh berries - in our cereal and yogurt, a frozen strawberry pie, (and making homemade strawberry ice cream is the plan for tonight).

Horray for Strawberries!

The Almighty Carousel

Awww - they LOVED the carousel.... but getting OFF our favorite animals once the ride was over was not as much fun :(

Here are some happy pictures:

First Day in Illinois

Our first day in Illinois (once we actually got there... but that's another story) was fun - the girls had no problem letting us join in on playtime!

Time for a Tea Party!

Brian and I were so pleased to be invited to the girls' tea party! It seems that any time the mood strikes... Time for a Tea Party!!
